Fungal microorganisms are known to produce several unusual steroid structures with antibacterial and antifungal activities such as fusidic acid, cephalosporin P, and azasterols. Recently, the ergokonins A and B have been described as metabolites of Trichoderma koningii which, in particular, are distinguishable from most of the other steroidal econdary metabolites known so far by the presence of a carboxyl group bound to carbon number 13. Both metabolites display promising antifungal activities e.g. against Candida species. Here we report the structure of a related new antibiotic named ergokonin C which we isolated from the mycelium of the mutant SF of the fungal strain Tolypocladium inflatum (obtained from T. inflatum DSM 915 by mutagenesis and selection).
