Use of a new antacid, synthetic hydrotalcite, in duodenal ulcer: clinical endoscopic study compared to cimetidine

A recently synthetized antacid, hydrotalcite, was compared with cimetidine. Patients (40, 24 males and 16 females), mean age 42.5 yr, with duodenal ulcer and marked symptoms of dyspepsia and pain, were divided, at random, into 2 groups and treated for 4 wk with 1 of the 2 drugs. Four g of hydrotalcite suspension were administered orally, 1 and 3 after the 3 meals and before bed time; 200 mg of cimetidine were given orally 3 times daily at the 3 meals and 400 mg were administered before bedtime. Clinical and endoscopic investigations show that there is no statistically significant difference between the therapeutic efficacy of the 2 treatments.
