Elevated immunoglobulin levels in the diagnosis of intrauterine parvovirus infections in pigs

Immunoglobulin determinations by rocket immunoelectrophoresis were carried out on 444 samples of fetal fluids from herds with records of fetal death. Increased levels of IgM and IgG or of IgM alone were found in 72% of 212 samples positive to porcine parvovirus (PPV) antibody assay, and 5% of them had increased IgG without detectable IgM. It is concluded that Ig determination is not sufficiently sensitive for an initial screening test. However, 98% of 167 samples with increased Ig were PPV antibody positive, so that the method has value as a supplementary test. The possibility of leakage of antibodies across the placental barrier was eliminated by examining 86 samples with increased Ig levels and/or PPV antibody for Talfan type virus antibody. All were negative.
