Red cell acid phosphatase frequency in a population from Calcutta

Red cell acid phosphatase phenotypes were determined in 100 healthy donors, 42 female and 58 male, from Calcutta by horizontal polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Electrophoresis was carried out on 5% polyacrylamide gel with citrate (pH 6.0) as the bridge buffer. Phenolphthalein diphosphate was used as the staining substrate. Gene frequencies were pa = 0.39, pb = 0.57 and pc = 0.04. Only 5 phenotypes A, BA, B, CA and CB were observed. Study of the phenotypic patterns of pregnant and non-pregnant females did not show any difference.
