Acid phosphatase activity as an index of pancreatic beta-cell function

Although acid phosphomonohydrolase (EC 3.1.3.2) activity was repeatedly demonstrated in the .beta.-cells of pancreatic islets, the precise role of this enzyme in insulin synthesis/release is not known. An attempt was made to correlate .beta.-cell acid phosphatase activity with insulin biosynthesis and release mechanisms. A positive relationship between the enzyme activity and the rate of proinsulin biosynthesis was demonstrated in isolated rat islets stimulated by glucose and some other sugars.
