Diagnosis and classification of the lymphoproliferative syndromes are based on their morphological, immunological and cytochemical characteristics. Acid phosphatase isoenzyme 5 has been only occasionally and scantily found in conditions other than hairy cell leukemia. The ability of hairy cells with acid phosphatase activity to withstand incubation with L(+)-tartaric acid (tartrate-resistance) has been ascribed to the isoenzyme 5 of that enzyme. A patient is reported with B-type lymphosarcoma-cell leukemia (centroblastic type) with tartrate-sensitive acid phosphatase (isoenzyme 5) activity. Apparently within the same cell type different lymphosarcoma-cell leukemia varieties might exist.
