Cell-free extract of L. carinii was resolved into 3 main fractions by gel filtration on Sephadex G-200. Polyacrylamide gel disc electrophoresis revealed the presence of 7-9 protein components in each of these fractions. Relatively higher MW protein-rich antigens of fractions 1 and 2 elicited predominantly precipitin response; while low MW carbohydrate-rich antigens of fraction 3 elicited non-precipitating agglutinin and homocytotropic antibody response in L. carinii-infected albino rats. Sera of animals with patent infection contained additional precipitin(s) not present in sera of animals with latent infection. This group of animals also possessed relatively higher titers of cytotropic and agglutinating antibodies.
