Relative biological effectiveness (RBE), a radiobiological parameter of importance was studied for a system of diploid yeast [Saccharomyces cerevisiae] for induction of a type of genetic alteration, viz., arginine convertants by fission neutrons. Against the reference radiation of 60Co gammas, this value was found to be 2.6. This value is in agreement with the typical RBE-LET (linear energy transfer) relationship for the yeast system. An attempt was made to correlate this value to that computed on the basis of the data of the secondary charged particles of fission neutron spectrum. The predicted value was calculated as 5.9. The observed value of RBE is significantly lower than the theoretical value for the yeast system for induction of genetic damage.
