The function of neutrophilic granulocytes in different pathological conditions

Several tests, including leukocyte mobilization, phagocytosis index, NBT reduction and in vitro bacteriolysis, were applied to patients with brucellosis, other bacterial infections or conditions favoring the development of infection (renal insufficiency, diabetes mellitus, liver disease and tissue necrosis). The results were compared with those of a healthy control group. The phagocytosis index was decreased in infections, including brucellosis. NBT reduction was increased in the different infections and decreased in brucellosis. In vitro bacteriolysis was decreased in brucellosis. Neutrophil phagocytosis and bacteriolysis were decreased in renal insufficiency. Diabetic patients had impaired leukocyte mobilization and phagocytosis, with normal bacteriolysis. In liver disease the phagocytosis index was depressed. In tissular necrosis the pattern of leukocyte behavior was similar to that in bacterial infection.
