Dosage of zeranol implant: effects on live and carcass traits of lambs

40 crossbred (Suffolk-Columbia-Hampshire) wethers were alloted to 5 groups at about 29 kg body weight, and were given no implant (controls) or 12, 24, 48 and 96 mg zeranol implants resp. for 33 days before slaughter. Daily gain during days 15-33 of the trial period was significantly higher in the group with the 96 mg dose than in those receiving 0-24 mg (0.45 vs. 0.32-0.36 kg). There were no significant differences between groups in feed consumption, feed conversion efficiency, final live weight, carcass traits, composition of the semitendinosus muscle, or cooking loss.
