Following X-irradiation of Caenorhabditis elegans, 13 new chromosomal duplications, all unlinked to their linkage group of origin were observed. 10 were X-chromosome duplications, comprising 6 half-translocations on 3 autosomal linkage groups and 4 free fragments. 5 of the half-translocations were homozygous viable, 2 of them cytologically recognizable as chromosome satellites with some mitotic instability. The 4 free-X duplications showed varying tendencies for mitotic loss, 3 of the fragments appeared not to overlap previously identified free fragments; the 4th carried genes from linkage group V as well as X. A procedure for identifying autosomal duplications is given and the properties of 3 duplications, all free and quite stable in hyperploids, of a region of linkage group II are described. New X-chromosome map data are presented.
