The antiepileptic properties of valproate sodium are investigated on a neuronal level in 20 rats. The primary central depressant effects of valproate sodium are not attributed to the potentiation of GABA neuronal inhibition but apparently a direct effect on neuronal membrane permeability. Valproate sodium is effective for control of electroshock-induced convulsions 6 min after i.p. administration.
