Mortality experience of 50 workers with occupational exposures to the products of coal hydrogenation processes

A study was undertaken to determine the mortality experience of 50 workers diagnosed with skin cancer or precancerous lesions. These workers were first diagnosed between 1955-1959 as part of a screening program for workers employed in a coal hydrogenation plant. Workers were traced and death certificates obtained for those who were deceased. Five of the workers died from noncancerous causes, 16 retired, 28 were still working and 1 subject was lost to follow-up. Because of the limited scope of the study (it only included those workers with skin lesions) and the small sample size (50), no firm conclusions can be made, although there apparently is no increase of death due to systemic cancers.
