Yellow-pigmented, fermenting, gram-negative peritrichous anaerobic bacteria are located in different tissues of cucumber, melon, watermelon, cucurbit plants, potato and chestnut leaves; they cause pathological damages of melons and watermelons and death of albino mice. They are similar to E. lathyri and are identified on the basis of the studied biological characters and the data from literature as E. herbicola (Duggeli) Dye. The presence in the culture of E. herbicola (E. agglomerans) of double-convex spindle-like bodies of the most diverse origin and of peculiar cell aggregation makes it possible to consider them differential characters of this species.
