The sensitivity of various cell lines and suckling mice to virus strains of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) isolated directly from patients' sera was examined. Vero-E6 cells were the most sensitive of all the cell lines tested. Suckling mice, inoculated intracerebrally and intraperitoneally with this virus, became ill about 2 weeks after inoculation. Pathological studies revealed various changes in many organs. Using indirect immunofluorescent and immunoenzymatic staining, viral antigens were found in the sections of the brain, kidenys and lungs. The viruses could be isolated and specific antibodies detected from the same infected mice. By repeated passages of the cell cultures and suckling mice, the virus particles and related structures were observed by electron microscopy in the infected cells.
