Thromboembolic meningoencephalitis associated with Haemophilus somnus infection

Recovery of H. somnus from cases of thromboembolic meningoencephalitis (TEME) in a beef fattening unit in N.E. Scotland during January to March 1979 is reported. Clinical signs and pathological changes identical to those described in feedlots in the USA were seen. H. somnus was recovered from the brain of two animals showing the 'sleeper syndrome' and the lungs of an animal in the same unit which died suddenly from severe exudative bronchopneumonia.
