Antibacterial activity of the amniotic fluid. I. Inhibition of the in vitro growth of Escherichia coli

The antibacterial effect of amniotic fluid was studied in 29 amniotic fluid samples, collected via the vagina in the course of uncomplicated, natural term deliveries. Medium, (brain heart infusion) containing the amniotic fluid was inoculated with E. coli strains and the bacterial population number was estimated in the 6th, 12th, 24th and 48th h of culturing. The results were compared with a control culture on the same medium without the amniotic fluid. It was demonstrated that the amniotic fluid from uncomplicated, term delivery demonstrates antibacterial activity against E. coli. These properties decrease in the 48th hour of culturing, which may indicate their depletion.
