Antibacterial properties of amniotic fluid in relation to selected bacterial strains

Determinations of antibacterial properties of amniotic fluid (human) were performed in relation to gram-negative and gram-positive bacterial strains. There were 40 amniotic samples collected during normal labors; the antibacterial activity of these samples was compared with those collected from labors where intrauterine fetal asphyxia was imminent. Considering the highest sensitivity of Pseudomonas areuginosa (no. 28 strain) to the antibacterial properties of the amniotic fluid, the sensitivity of this strain was compared with other Pseudomonas strains collected from different sources. Inhibition of growth of all tested colonies was seen; the range was variable. The amniotic fluid with meconium demonstrated smaller antibacterial activity.
