Early effects of insulin, glucagon and calcitonin or serum Ca were studied in clinical patients and in Wistar rats. Average serum Ca was reduced by 0.44, 0.64, 0.72 and 0.37 mg/100 ml (P < 0.01, < 0.001, < 0.001 and < 0.001, respectively) in 12 non-diabetic and by 0.47, 0.63, 0.58 and 0.32 mg/100 ml (P < 0.001 for all) in 25 diabetic patients at the 5th, 10th, 15th and 20th min following s.c. administration of 0.5 U after glucagon were preceeded by changes in serum Ca. On the analogy of literature data about parathormone action, this early hypocalcemic effect of insulin, glucagon and calcitonin may be due to activation of target cells by these hormones.
