Results of a comparison of methods for assessing a human blackfly attack

Records of blackflies attacking people in the Zeya district, of the Amur region [Russian SFSR, USSR] were analyzed. Similar but not identical data on species composition, distribution and seasonal changes in abundance were obtained with all the methods used (dark bell, improved butterfly-net with removable sac, and registration on human bait). The results with the butterfly-net were intermediate between those on human bait and bell methods. The simplicity and high catch-rate with the butterfly-net make this method the best. Some behaviorial features of blackflies were detected, e.g., group attacks on their prey.
