Action of insect juvenile hormone analogs on ixodid tick nymphs

The effect of 2 insert juvenile hormone analogues [JHA], Low's mixture and altozar, on nymphs of 2 ixodid ticks, Haemaphysalis concinna and Ixodes ricinus, was studied. Both lethal and physiological effects were observed after treatment of engorged nymphs immediately or soon after detachment. No effect was noted when starved nymphs directly before the bloodmeal, or sucking nymphs were treated. In other cases either a lethal effect (treatment of starved nymphs) or a physiological effect (treatment of starved nymphs 3 days before bloodmeal, engorged nymphs after they become immobile, engorged nymphs in diapausa) occurred. The similarity of physiological effects exerted by JHA in ixodid tick nymphs and in insect pupae was noted.
