Action of the lysozyme isolated from ixodid tick species on Rickettsia prowazekii, Rickettsia canada and Rickettsia sibirica

The effect of lysozyme isolated from Ornithodoros moubata, O. papillipes, Alveonasus lahorensis and Hyalomma asiaticum, and egg lysozyme on Rickettsia prowazekii, R. canada, and R. sibirica was studied. A definite antirickettsial activity of O. moubata tick lysozyme for R. prowazekii and R. canada but not R. sibirica was established. Lysozyme of other tick species had practically no effect on quantitative infectivity values of rickettsial suspensions. EM examinations of R. prowazekii after treatment with O. moubata lysozyme revealed some changes in the structural organization of rickettsia cell.
