A considerable degree of adaptation of rickettsiae to existence in ticks was found. Ornithodoros papillipes and O. moubata ticks were regularly infected by feeding through a membrane and retained the agent for long periods (735 and 588 days, respectively). Hyalomma dromedarii, H. asiaticum and O. papillipes ticks picked up Rickettsia canada when fed on infected guinea pigs. After an infectious meal the rickettsiae were found in O. papillipes ticks at 526 days and in H. dromedarii at 109 days. The study also established transovarial transmission of Rickettsia canada in O. papillipes and H. dromedarii ticks. No transmission of rickettsia by infected ticks fed on guinea pigs was demonstrated. [Alveonosus lahorensis, Argas persicus, Dermacentor pictus and D. andersoni were also tested.].
