Circulating antibodies to cow's milk proteins in children with acute diarrhoea

Circulating antibodies against cows' milk proteins were studied in infants aged 2-11 months. 26 were convalescing after acute diarrhoea caused by bacterial infection, the remaining 9 had no history of gastrointestinal disease (controls). At the time of the study all infants were normally hydrated and were being fed diluted cows' milk. Haemagglutinating antibody titres were significantly higher in the group of infants that had suffered from diarrhoea (P < 0.001). Results suggest that the permeability of the intestine to intact dietary proteins is enhanced during intestinal infection.
