Antibodies to milk in atopic dermatitis in children

Levels of serum antibodies to 4 cows' milk proteins were determined by the coated tanned red cell passive agglutination test [Gunther et al., DSA 23, 432] in (i) 42 children from 3 months to 14 yr of age with atopic dermatitis and (ii) a control group of 50 healthy children. The numbers of children in each group in whom high titres of antibodies to the various proteins were detected were as follows: serum albumin, (i) 35, (ii) 19; casein, (i) 34, (ii) 7; alpha -lactalbumin, (i) 31, (ii) 14; beta -lactoglobulin, (i) 29, (ii) 4. The differences between the 2 groups were all statistically significant.
