Fasting plasma free amino acids of infants and children consuming cow milk proteins

Plasma was sampled fasting from 165 children 3 to 42, average 17 months old who had been treated for protein-energy malnutrition. Most had been on a diet with calcium caseinate as the only protein; the others had had a modified cow's milk formula. Protein provided less than 6.4% of the energy for 8 children, 6.4 to 7.0% for 81, 8% for 42 and more than 8% for 34 of them. The mean ( plus or minus s.d.) values for 123 of the children were: total amino acids (TAA) ( mu mol/litre) 2896 plus or minus 415, total essential amino acids (TEAA) ( mu mol/litre) 749 plus or minus 142, TEAA/TAA 0.288 plus or minus 0.031, Thr/TEAA 0.159 plus or minus 0.045, Val/TEAA 0.227 plus or minus 0.036, 1/2Cys/TEAA 0.042 plus or minus 0.016, Met/TEAA 0.027 plus or minus 0.006, Ile/TEAA 0.071 plus or minus 0.011, Leu/TEAA 0.120 plus or minus 0.017, Tyr/TEAA 0.079 plus or minus 0.021, Phe/TEAA 0.061 plus or minus 0.017, Lys/TEAA 0.147 plus or minus 0.039, Trp/TEAA 0.065 plus or minus 0.021.
