The inhibitory effect of dopaminergic drugs such as bromocriptine (BC) on milk secretion and the role of prolactin in lactation are reviewed. Use of BC or metergoline (MT) as alternatives to oestrogens for inhibiting lactation was studied in 38 women initially in day 8-18 of lactation. Milk secretion ceased in 10 of 12 women treated daily for 5 or 10 days with 5 mg BC (CB 154: Parlodel, Sandoz); 1 of these women later relapsed. A total positive response was observed in all 8 women treated with BC at 7.5 mg/day, and also in 18 women treated with MT (Liserdol, Farmitalia) at 8 mg/day for 5 days. No adverse side effects were apparent with either drug. Differences in mode of BC and MT action are explained. Results confirm the effectiveness of both drugs in inhibition of lactation.
