The details of 3 men, one with Trichophyton verrucosum lesions on the arm, one with Epidermophyton floccosum infection of the thigh and one with Microsporum canis infection of the neck and shoulder are reported. They were all treated with econazole. After contact of the scales from lesions of 9 patients with 1% econazole nitrate for a determined period, the scales were washed and inoculated into test tubes containing Sabouraud's medium. Controls were untreated scales. Growth of fungi in the tubes was recorded at several intervals to detect delayed fungal growth. In all the spp. tested (2 T. mentagrophytes, 1 T. interdigitale, 1 T. tonsurans, 2 T. verrucosum, 1 M. canis and 2 Candida albicans) growth inhibition started within 1 min after the contact had been established.
