The effect of norsulfasol combination with polymyxin M and its single components on the growth of 16 strains and the fatty acid composition of 4 strains of P. mirabilis, isolated from the patients with urological diseases was studied. Four hour exposure of the bacteria to norsulfasol was necessary for producing the inhibitory effect of the combination on the growth of the P. mirabilis strains sensitive to the combination. The combination produced no inhibitory effect on the growth of the bacteria previously grown in the presence of polymyxin M. The level of the cyclopropane and saturated fatty acids increased, while that of the non-saturated fatty acids decreased in the strains by P. mirabilis sensitive and resistant to the combination under the effect of norsulfasol. Polymyxin M had an analogous effect on the fatty acid composition of the strains sensitive to the combination but had no effect on the fatty acid composition of the strains resistant to the combination. The effect of the combination on the fatty acid composition of the strains sensitive to it was evident from increased levels of the saturated fatty acids and mainly octadecanoic acid and decreased levels of methylenhexadecanoic and hexadecenoic acids, which was shown on separate grown bacteria. The effect of the combination on the fatty acid composition of the strains resistant to it was analogous to that of norsulfasol alone.
