50 ejaculates from bulls at AI centres were divided into 2 portions and were diluted 1:1 with 0.15 M sodium chloride. One portion served as a control and 1 or 100 units kallikrein/ml semen was added to the other. For additions of 1 unit kallikrein/ml, there was no marked difference in sperm motility between experimental and control portions immediately after addition of the kallikrein, but sperm motility was 90 and 500% higher in the experimental than in the control portions after incubation for 1 and 4 h resp. Similar results were obtained when 100 units kallikrein/ml were used. After 2 and 4 h incubation resp., spermatozoa from semen receiving 1 unit kallikrein/ml were able to penetrate 19.6 and 13.2 mm, on average, through oviductal secretions from oestrous cows v 8.1 and 2.9 mm for control spermatozoa (P<0.001). Corresponding penetrations for semen treated with 100 units kallikrein/ml were 17.1 and 9.5 mm v 7.3 and 3.0 for control semen.
