Influence of verapamil on the cold pressor test in normal subjects

Response to the cold pressor test (CPT) was studied in 10 normal subjects before and 6 days after oral treatment with the Ca antagonist, verapamil, at a dose of 240 mg/day. Arterial pressure, heart rate, ECG and plasma renin activity induced by CPT were monitored under basal conditions and after treatment with verapamil. The decrease by verapamil of the pressure increase induced by CPT as determined by increased peripheral resistance is statistically significant. The results are attributed to vascular smooth muscle relaxation due to Ca antagonism.
