Tiamulin, a new antibiotic for controlling enzootic pneumonia (EP) in pigs

To control enzootic pneumonia in swine, the efficacy of tiamulin - a semisynthetic derivative of the antibiotic pleuromulin - was evaluated in a field trial in a pig fattening operation in Hungary. Medicated feed containing 200 ppm of the drug was fed for 10 days (test group A) and 300 ppm fed for 5 days (test group B). A third test group (C) was left untreated for control. Within a period of 3-4 weeks after start of treatment pigs of test group A showed less pronounced clinical symptoms, decrease of mortality and improved weight gain. In test group B diseased pigs also showed improvement of clinical symptoms and reduced mortality but further outbreaks of pneumonia occurred.
