Bacteriological meat inspection was positive in 1248 (26%) of 4724 fattened swine with tail lesions complicated by embolic pneumonia. Such pigs could be detected at pre-slaughter inspection. The commonest bacteria present were Corynebacterium pyogenes and haemolytic streptococci.
