Hypertrophic gastropathy similar to Ménétrier's disease in pigs slaughtered in accordance with regulations

Menetrier's disease of man is a disorder of unknown origin manifested by very large, thick gastric folds, with large glands, little inflammation, and cystic dilation, occasionally involving the submucosa. 2828 out of 8408 slaughter pigs aged between 8-9 months which were a triple cross of Large White X Pietrain X Belgian Landrace and all coming from one farm showed hypertrophic gastropathy similar to that seen in Menetrier's disease. The changes are described in detail and illustrated with photographs and photomicrographs. Earlier publications on the subject referring to man, swine, mice, monkeys and dogs are reviewed and discussed. Although an aetiological agent(s) was not identified it is suggested that an allergic-hyperergic component mediated by immunoglobulin may be involved.
