Maternal thyroparathyroidectomy (TPTX) on day 1 of gestation did not cause fetal anomalies in rats. There was no difference in average fetal wt between TPTX and control rats but average placental wt was higher in TPTX rats. Litter size was reduced in TPTX group. Litter size was inversely related with fetal and placental wt in TPTX rats. Maternal serum thyroxine and Ca levels were not related to fetal and placental growth.
