Standard glucose tolerance test was made on 97 normal poor or well-to-do Indian women and 30 with severe pre-eclamptic toxaemia, all in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Fasting blood glucose was significantly lower in poor or toxaemic women than in wealthier or healthy women. There was a close direct relation between fasting blood glucose of the mother and birthweight of the infant. Glucose tolerance curve and increment after glucose load were the same in the 2 socioeconomic groups but 45% of women with toxaemia had low increment and low absolute values, which it was thought might have been due to impaired absorption from the gut or rapid utilization from peripheral tissue.
