Plurality of human papillomaviruses

The clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the lesions induced by a human papillomavirus (HPV) suggest that some of them may constitute separate diseases caused by a specific HPV. To check this hypothesis, the HPV extracted from pooled plantar warts and that isolated from the lesions of a patient (ML) bearing multiple common warts on the hands were characterized and compared. Both plantar and ML HPV DNA have similar MV but were different by restriction enzyme RNA-DNA filter hybridization. The 2 viruses had distinct electrophoretic polypeptide patterns and showed no antigenic cross reaction by immunofluorescence techniques. Thus, plantar HPV and ML HPV constitute 2 distinct types of human papillomaviruses which are provisionally called HPV type 1 and HPV type 2, respectively. HPV type 2 was characterized in the lesions of 2 of 4 additional patients bearing multiple common warts on the hands, suggesting that it may be associated preferentially to common warts. These data demonstrate the plurality of HPV and are consistent with the preferential association of some clinical types of warts of papillomas with a specific type of HPV.
