Considerable similarities exist between mechanisms of renal stone formation and bone formation, despite obvious differences between the 2 processes. The essential features for bone formation include the requirement for matrix, the control of mineralization, and cellular and hormonal regulation. These are compared to the known events in kidneys leading to crystallization in stone formation.
