The effect of the administration of BeCl2 solution on development of the early stages of the chick embryo was studied. In doses of 300 .mu.g to 3 .mu.g, Be (always dissolved in 3 .mu.l twice-distilled water) was lethal for most of the embryos and severely damaged the survivors. In doses of 0.3 .mu.g to 0.03 .mu.g it was no longer lethal, but caused malformations, while in smaller doses it did not affect the embryos. The most frequent malformations at 2 days old were a malposed and malformed heart and caudal regression, while after administration at 3 days there were body wall aplasia and varying degrees of strait jacket syndrome. After administration at 4 days of development heart malformations, body wall aplasia, strait jacket syndrome, malformations of the mandible and facial clefts, together with a whole range of further malformations (exencephalia, malformations of the limbs, eyes and eyelids) were found. Frequent disconnection of the extra- and intraembryonal circulation and instantaneous cardiac arrest were also found. Be is primarily cardiotoxic for the young chick embryo.
