Solanum malacoxylon toxicity to pigs

An aqueous extract of Solanum malacoxylon (SM) and an activated extract, prepared by incubation with fresh rumen liquor (SMLR) were given to newly weaned pigs. Two pigs were given SM by mouth at 0.2 or 1.0 g/kg bodyweight weekly, 2 had SMLR by mouth at 0.2 or 1.0 g/kg bodyweight in 2 equal weekly doses and 2 were controls. Pigs given the extracts gained weight more slowly than controls. Mean Ca in plasma was more in all treated pigs, and was significantly more for pigs given the larger amounts than for controls. Mean P was less for treated pigs than for controls and less with SMLR than with SM. Pigs were killed at 57 days. No calcification in major blood vessels was seen post mortem. Nephrosis was seen in all treated pigs.
