Effects of Solanum malacoxylon on calcium metabolism in patients with chronic renal failure

Four patients 24 to 55 years old with renal failure, on maintenance haemodialysis, were treated with the active principle in the leaves of Solanum malacoxylon (SM) by mouth for 6 days in a single daily dose equivalent to 300 mg dried leaf while on their usual home diet. SM increased absorption of Ca in all 4 patients and increased serum Ca in 3. There was no change in serum phosphate or the high serum parathyrin values or in blood Hb, white cell count, serum glucose, alkaline phosphatase or proteins.
