An incident of suspected furazolidone toxicity in pigs

At 7-8 weeks old, and 7-10 days after weaning, some pigs of a herd showed mild ataxia with trailing of the hind legs, while others were "goose-stepping", or crouching, then leaping like kangaroos, and some fell on their sides and lay paddling; many also showed very scaly skins. When affected pigs were allowed to rest quietly, they tended to recover in a few minutes. The cause appeared to be furazolidone that had been added to the ration of both unweaned and weaned pigs at 3632 g/ton.
