The effects of diets deficient in linoleic acid (EFA) and containing high amounts of saturated fatty acids on platelet aggregation and platelet phospholipid fatty acids were studied in rats. Previous studies showed that rats fed a diet high in saturated fats, but containing cholesterol and cholic acid, had a marked predisposition to thrombosis, together with an increase in the susceptibility of platelets to thrombin but not to ADP-induced aggregation. The same results are obtained with platelet aggregation of rats fed a simple purified diet rich in saturated fats, deficient in linoleic acid and not containing cholesterol or cholic acid. This increase in thrombin-induced aggregation appears to coincide with changes in the fatty acid composition of platelet phospholipids.
