Sixteen novel 1-methyl-5-nitroimidazoles substituted at 2-position were examined for activity against Tritrichomonas foetus, Trypanosoma brucei and T. cruzi in NMRI mice and Entamoeba histolytica in hamsters. 6 proved to be superior to metronidazole and one to tinidazole against Tritrichomonas foetus. Almost all aldoximes and ketoximes showed very good in vitro activity in the range 0.3 to 1.0 mu g/ml. The compounds had no marked effect against the other protozoa.
