The effects of chloralose anesthesia on the BS responses to glucose in dogs in the course of glucose tolerance tests were studied. Chloralose induced a moderate glucose intolerance and abolished both the insulin response to hyperglycemia in the animals and the lipolytic response at the end of the test. Apparently chloralose anesthesia is improper for metabolic studies in experimental biology.
