It is suggested that tryptophan residues are essential to the hemagglutinating activity of jack bean Con erythrocyte agglutination. Following 60Co .gamma.-irradiation in solutions saturated with N2 and N2O, Con A progressively loses its ability to agglutinate erythrocytes.
