The importance is underlined of sensitive and rapid tests for virus and antibody in relation to control of contagious diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and classical swine fever (CSF). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) are useful in this respect, particularly because of the inherent high capacity and sensitivity. A description is given of ELISA for the detection of FMD virus and antibody and CSF virus antibody.
