32 pubescent rats were administered megestranol and studied to determine the effect of the hippocampus on the contraceptive effect of this preparation. 16 of the animals received .6 mg of the preparation per 200 gm of body weight over the course of 14 days. The remaining animals were given the same dose on a background of bilateral electrocoagulation of the hippocampus. On the 3rd day of the treatment the animals were fertilized. On the 21st day of pregnancy the animals were killed and the concentration of corpora lutea was determined for both the mother and the fetus. Megestranol in this contraceptive dose was not revealed to exert any substantive changes in the luteinizing activity of the adenohypophysis. The electrocoagulation of the hippocampus lead to the disruption of the correlation of the content of luteinizing hormone in the adenohypophysis and to the alteration of the effect of megestranol in this area, significantly lowering the contraceptive effect.
