Biological control potential of Anisops bouvieri Kirkaldy (Hemiptera : Notonectidae)

Anisops bouvieri Kirk. is a common notonectid found in many aquatic habitats (such as rice-fields, ponds, irrigation channels, rainwater pools and drains), in the Pondicherry district of Tamil Nadu, India, and both nymphs and adults feed on mosquito larvae. In a laboratory study of its life-cycle, the bug completed development from egg to adult in about 35 days. Small-scale field tests against Culex pipiens fatigans Wied. (C. fatigans) in cisterns showed that A. bouvieri has the potential for controlling mosquito breeding in certain situations.
