The potential of Neoaplectana glaseri, N. bibionis and N. carpocapsae as biocontrol agents is reviewed with respect to biology, host range, safety, propagation, environmental sensitivity, field trials and future prospects. At least 8 States in the USA support neoaplectanid research, and worldwide their control potential is being examined in Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, England, France, Italy, New Zealand and the USSR. It is considered that the most promising treatment sites may be cryptic habitats where infective stages are sheltered from environmental extremes. Prospects for the biological control of insect pests using neoaplectanid nematodes, especially Neoaplectana glaseri, N. bibionis and N. carpocapsae, are reviewed, with special reference to the biology of the parasites, host range, safety, propagation, environmental sensitivity and field trials.
